My readings don't match a real SPL meter.
Phone microphones are tuned for speech, not measurement, and every model differs. Use the calibration setting to offset against a reference meter if you have one. Readings are consistent with themselves, which is what matters for comparing one place with another.
Why does it need the microphone?
To measure sound level. Audio is analysed as it arrives and never recorded, stored, or transmitted — only the resulting numbers are kept.
Does it measure while in the background?
No. Measurement stops when you leave the app.
What is A-weighting?
A filter that approximates how human hearing responds to different frequencies, which is what most noise regulations are written against. C-weighting is flatter and better for low-frequency and peak measurement.
